Coach Peterson died from in the hospital where he was reportedly being treated for pneumonia symptoms. With its 61-year old coach in the hospital, the Railers took to the field against West Franklin, falling behind 10-0 at halftime.
In the locker room at half, the Topeka Capital-Journal reports that assistant coach informed the team that their leader had passed away.
How did the team honor its coach?
Herrington scored three unanswered touchdowns to win 21-10 to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Peterson was a head coach for over 40-years in Kansas. In 1997, he led Centre to the Eight-Man Division I state title. His career record was 164-109
