Smith Center Wins 4th Straight Kansas Title

For the first time this season, Smith Center (KS) trailed in a football game. And even though Pittsburg Colgan was able to take a 7-0 lead on the three-time Kansas Class 2-1A champs and hold the Redman 27 points under their per game average, it wasn't enough as Smith Center won its fourth straight crown 40-14.

Once again it was the Redman rushing attack that led the way with Braden Wilson picking-up 225 yards on 24 carries and scoring three touchdowns. Quarterback Joe Windscheffel carried the ball 10 times for 179 yards and two scores.

Kansas High School Football Championships

The tiny town of 1,931 has made national news this year for its perfection and also its national record 72 points in a first quarter earlier this year in a game against Plainville..

Smith Center has 11 straight shutouts this year and has outscored opponents 804-6. The only points allowed by the Redman came last week in a 44-6 semifinal win over St. Francis.

72-0...In Just the 1st Quarter!!!

Smith Center High School (KS) played a first quarter for the ages on Tuesday night in the opening round of the Kansas state high school football 2A playoffs.

The three-time defending 2A champs scored 72 points in the first twelve minutes on the way to an 83-0 win over Plainville. The 72 first quarter points is believed to be a national record for points in a quarter. According to published reports, the previous record was 66 points by Prescott High in Arizona back in 1925.

The first quarter explosion was set-up by six Plainville turnovers. The Smith Center coaching staff didn't try to run-up the score in this one, as it began sitting its starters midway through the first quarter.

Plainville isn't the only team that's had a tough time with Smith Center this year. Including Tuesday's game, Smith Center has now outscored its opponents 640-0.
