According to the Wichita Eagle, Northwest's Demarcus Robinson had the upper-hand on Southeast's Joseph Randle. Robinson, a Kansas State verbal commitment, ran for 274-yards and three touchdowns in Northwest's 33-19 win.

Also, Smith Center's win streak is now at 72 after a 16-10 win last night over Ellis.

Watch Smith Center Go for #71 Tonight LIVE on the Internet

by Jeff Fisher
Kansas High School Football Huddle

The beauty of high school football has definitely changed at the top because of ESPN's constant desire to push the envelope with made-for-TV match-ups that are usually based national rankings that are based on just a couple people's opinions. In my opinion, the games usually disappoint.

So instead of watching tonight's ESPN2 match-up between Lakeland (FL) vs. De La Salle (CA), why not tune-in on the web to the tiny Kansas team that is trying to break De La Salle's record 151-game win streak. You can check-out the Smith Center Redmen go after their 71st straight win against Phillipsburg tonight at 7 at www.weareredman.com.

For those of you that don't know about Smith Center, you may want to pick-up a copy of Our Boys written by NY Times author Joe Drape, which will take you right inside this tiny town of less than 2,000.

If you can't get to the book before the game, check-out this story from NCKSsports.com on Smith Center fullback and defensive end Matt Atwood.

Oh, and if you want to watch, Lakeland and De La Salle you can tune-in at 10 PM EST tonight on ESPN2.

That's a full night of high school football!!

McPherson Head Coach Goes for Victory #300

by Jeff Fisher
Kansas High School Football Huddle

Tom Young, the head man at McPherson who has been roaming the sidelines in Kansas as a head coach for 39 years, is hoping to enter a very rare club tonight. According to the Wichita Eagle, if McPherson beats unbeaten Newton tonight, Young will win the 300th game of his career. He brings a 299-94 record into the match-up.

Check back tonight at the Kansas High School Football Huddle or The High School Football Huddle to see if Young's team can get the job done for its coach.

Kansas High School Football Scoreboard - Week 1

by Jeff Fisher
Kansas High School Football Huddle

Smith Center ran the nation's longest active win streak to 68 games Friday night with a 59-0 shutout of Plainville. Joe Drape, author of the great high school football book Our Boys was at the game and sent me a note on Twitter saying..."even a year later, I marvel at their program and town. They probably are more talented this year. Redmen started six sophomores."

If you haven't picked-up a copy of Our Boys...do so! It's a great way to start the high school football season.

Garden Plains Gets Jump on Kansas High School Football Pre-Season with Midnight Madness

by Jeff Fisher
Kansas High School Football Huddle

On Sunday I told Huddle readers about the great new book Our Boys by New York Times writer Joe Drape that chronicles Smith Center's run to its fifth straight Kansas high school football championship last year. It's a great book about the passion for football in the country's heartland.

Not to be outdone or to show that Smith Center doesn't have the market cornered on football pride, Garden Plain opened the 2009 pre-season with a little midnight madness as the Owls took to the field at 12:01 AM Monday morning for a two-hour practice.

The Wichita Eagles and VarsityKansas.com have the story and the video.

Review of Our Boys...A Perfect Season on the Plains with the Smith Center Redmen

by Jeff Fisher
Kansas High School Football Huddle

After the hustle-and-bussle of three days in New York City to check-out the screening of my girlfriend Trish Hoffman's big screen debut in the new Joe Otting movie Under New Management, I settled into my airplane seat looking forward to my flight back to Chicago and reading New York Times writer Joe Drape's new book Our Boys, which chronicles the 2008 season of the Smith Center (Kansas) Redmen.

From the moment I began reading Our Boys, I was transported to this tiny town with a population of 1,931 people. Yes, the book is about Smith Center's drive for a fifth straight Kansas Class 2A high school football title, but Drape does an excellent job of weaving Midwest history and culture in-and-out of this great 265-page read.

Personally, as someone who is fascinated with small town football, I could feel Drape's love of the sport and Smith Center's people throughout.

For the book, Drape actually moved his advertising executive wife and young son from NYC to the tiny town that is smack dab in the middle of the United States. That fact alone, hooked me!

Ask Trish, I don't think there's anything more romantic than a Charles Kuralt-like tour of the America's high school football landscape.

Drape set the hook on me on Page 69 when he wrote:

"When we heard sirens here, we did not tune them out as in New York. Our hearts sank because they signaled that somebody we knew had taken ill, or had been in an accident or was in some kind of trouble."

It's that sort of dig into the community's soul that Drape puts in Our Boys from the beginning when he describes the highs-and-lows of the town from its farming heyday; to the Dust Bowl of the 30's; to win #67 that gave the community its fifth straight state championship.

Notice I said "gave the community" the championship! The Redmen won the game on the field, but as Drape eloquently tells us, it truly does take a village. Bravo Joe!

Our Boys comes out this week, and I can't think of a better way for a true fan of high school football to begin the season!

Pick it up!

Smith Center Owns Nation's Longest High School Football Win Streak

by Jeff Fisher
Kansas High School Football Huddle

With South Panola (MS) and Maryville (TN) losing on back-to-back days last December, Smith Center of Kansas owns the nation's longest active high school football win streak. South Panola's streak, which is the third longest all-time in high school football ended at 89, while Maryville ended at 74.

Next month, you'll be able to learn a lot more about the Smith Center Redmen when New York Times write Joe Drape's book Our Boys comes out on August 18th. Drape moved to his family to the small town of 1,931 to do the book. You can learn move about Drape's book at www.joedrape.com.

After plenty of research, here is the most accurate active win streak list I could come-up with...if I missed a team, please feel free to email me at jeff@blitzgroupllc.com.

1. Smith Center (KS) - 67 straight wins
2. Wayne Hills (NJ) - 52 straight wins
3. Plymouth (NH) - 44 straight wins
4. Timpview (UT) - 36 straight wins
5. Saguaro (AZ) - 33 straight wins
6. Lake Travis (TX) - 30 straight wins
7. Soldotna (AK) - 29 straight wins
8. Skyline (WA) - 28 straight wins
8. River Hill (MD) - 28 straight wins
10. Jupiter Christian (FL) 27 straight wins
10. Solon (IA) - 27 straight wins
12. Centennial (AZ) - 26 straight wins
