Sunrise Christian Academy's Trey Hall to talk about Record-Breaking QB Zach Howell on Tomorrow Night's High School Football America Radio Show

by Jeff Fisher
Kansas High School Football Huddle

Sunrise Christian Academy head football coach Trey Hall will join me tomorrow night on High School Football America to talk about his record-setting quarterback Zach Howell, who earlier this year set a new state record with 579 yards passing in a game.

Last week, Howell almost broke his own record when he completed 41 of 55 passes for 565 yards and eight touchdowns in a 58-30 win over Horton.

Howell set the mark on September 2nd in a 26-13 win over Christ Prep Academy.  According to MaxPreps, through seven games, the 6-1, 160 pound junior has thrown for 2,471 yards and 24 touchdowns.

The Buffaloes play in the Kansas Christian Athletic Association.

Herrington AD Mark Cook on High School Football America Radio Show Tonight

by Jeff Fisher
Kansas High School Football Huddle

It's been a tough week in the tiny town of Herrington as it tries to move forward from the death of its high school football coach Bud Peterson.

Tonight, Herrington athletic director Mark Cook will be my guest on High School Football America to talk about how his school, football team and community is coping with the loss.  Peterson died in the hospital last Friday.

Herrington's players learned of the news at halftime of its game with West Franklin.  Down 10-0 at the break, the Railers stormed back to win 21-10 to improve to 2-0 this season.

Team Rally After News of Head Coach's Death

by Jeff Fisher
Kansas High School Football Huddle

My condolences and prayers go out to to the Herrington High School, its football team and Bud Peterson's family.

Coach Peterson died from in the hospital where he was reportedly being treated for pneumonia symptoms.  With its 61-year old coach in the hospital, the Railers took to the field against West Franklin, falling behind 10-0 at halftime.

In the locker room at half, the Topeka Capital-Journal reports that assistant coach informed the team that their leader had passed away.

How did the team honor its coach?

Herrington scored three unanswered touchdowns to win 21-10 to improve to 2-0 on the season.

Peterson was a head coach for over 40-years in Kansas.  In 1997, he led Centre to the  Eight-Man Division I state title.  His career record was 164-109

Tonganoxie Head Football Coach Resigns Two Days Before Season Starts

by Jeff Fisher
Kansas High School Football Huddle

The Kansas high school football regular season begins this weekend, but according to The Kansas City Star, Tonganoxie will not have its head coach of the last 12-years on the sidelines when it takes on Bishop Ward on Friday.

The newspaper reports that Mark Elston resigned Wednesday, one day after he was suspended by the school district over an apparent verbal altercation with a player.

Defensive coordinator Matt Bond will reportedly take-over as interim head coach.

Last year Tonganoxie was 1-8.

Gardner Edgerton's Bubba Starling Still Trying to Decide Between College Football & Major League Baseball

by Jeff Fisher
Kansas High School Football Huddle

On April 3rd when I spoke with Gardner Edgerton's three-sport athlete Bubba Starling on the NHSCA Sports Hour, we knew the young man was going to have a major decision.

Starling had already committed to play quarterback at the University of Nebraska, but he also knew in a couple of months, he would be a high pick in the Major League Amateur Draft.  When draft day came, he was taken with the fifth pick overall by the nearby Kansas City Royals, and that made the decision even bigger.

When I asked him on the April 3rd show which way he was leaning, he said, "I don't know if I'm ready for that big step going from high school baseball to major league baseball, as far as maturity.  I just think the best thing for me to do right now is to go up to Nebraska and play two sports there."

Well, when Nebraska opened fall camp last week, Starling wasn't in Cornhusker red-and-white, but he also wasn't wearing a Royals uniform either.  However, he is enrolled in Lincoln.

Now the clock is ticking toward midnight on August 15th.  That's when Starling must sign a major league contract with the Royals or wait two more years to be drafted again.

It's been reported that Starling, who is represented by super-agent Scott Boras could receive a MLB contract with a signing bonus in excess of $7 million dollars.

So for now, Cornhusker fans are turning Royal blue while holding their breath in anticipation of Starling's decision.

As far as Starling, he texted a message to the Kansas City Star last week saying, "It's getting really stressful now, too".
